Red Japanese Maple

Common name:Red Japanese Maple
Botanical name:Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum'

This Japanese Maple grows as a small, deciduous tree complete with palmate leaves that turn red and endure for the entire season.

Vinca Rosea, Madagascar Periwinkle

Common name:Vinca Rosea, Madagascar Periwinkle
Botanical name:Catharanthus roseus

This groundcover can reach about 3' in height and has small, glossy green leaves with white and pink flowers that bloom in summer and fall.

Southern Magnolia, Bull Bay

Common name:Southern Magnolia, Bull Bay
Botanical name:Magnolia grandiflora

Its large, simple leathery appearance makes the pyramidal Magnolia grandiflora perfect for either a street or lawn tree. Its leaves are 4"-8" long, and its powerfully fragrant blooms are carried throughout the summer and fall. If these plants are grafted , they are more predictable (may take 15 years to bloom). Ungrafted trees will take only 2-3 years. Restricted root areas or heavy soils will slow the growth process. In zones 4 and 5, the tree needs a warm wall or a pocket.

Veitch Compact Gardenia

Common name:Veitch Compact Gardenia
Botanical name:Gardenia augusta 'Veitchii'

The growth of this plant is lower and more compact than the 'Mystery' variety. It grows 3'-4' high and as wide. Its foliage is smaller, but has the same dark, glossy green color as the 'Mystery' variety. Its white double flowers are 1.5" wide and are highly fragrant. It needs sun to part shade for growth, and it blooms more profusely than the 'Mystery'.

Bearded Iris

Common name:Bearded Iris
Botanical name:Iris Bearded Hybrids

This perennial will grow 1'-3' tall and has medium sized, blue green leaves with flowers of different colors that bloom in spring. It needs well draining soil and full sun. Many are fragrant and rebloom several times a year. Plant rhizomes in Sept or Oct. They need water once a week during the hot spells. Top dress with compost and gypsum in January and August.

Permeable surface allows water to percolate rather than run off.

Water Saving Tip:

Water-wise plants can be beautiful as well as practical.

Take your 'My List' Hydrozone Report to a landscape designer, or local nursery, when selecting and purchasing plants.
